Labor party crisis deepens
Rep. Shim Sang-jung yesterday stepped down as the leader of the progressive Democratic Labor Party in a move expected to trigger a full-blown fissure between the party`s two major factions.
Shim`s resignation came one day after party delegates voted to reject a renewal proposal made by her ad-hoc leadership committee, including the dismissal of two radical pro-Pyongyang members convicted in an espionage scandal in 2006.
The assemblywoman has yet to announce her departure from the party, which observers say is likely to be soon.
Shim and her supporters, the People`s Democracy faction of the DLP, called for decisive action to strip the party of North Korean leanings. The PD is formed of moderate members who support significant changes to overhaul the unpopular progressive party.
Shim`s resignation from the emergency reform taskforce is therefore expected to spark a split between the PD and the National Liberalists, a group of more radical, pro-Pyongyang members within the DLP. The majority NL has voted down the reform proposal.
Factional fighting has been intensifying in the wake of the party`s poor showing in the Dec. 19 presidential election.
"We did not perceive the reform package to be a real remedy," said Kim Chang-hyun, former secretary-general of the DLP and member of the NL. He said further discussion was needed in order for the party to reach a decision on next steps.
The inevitable fallout between the PD and the NL is likely to mark the party`s first factional divide in the eight years since it was launched, critics say.
The DLP became the first leftist party in the nation to have seats in the National Assembly in 2002.
This reputation is on the verge of crumbling, observers say, noting that up to 100 or so DLP supporters in Seoul`s west and northern regions have said they would leave the party.
Party heavyweights such as Roh Hoe-chan, a fellow legislator who supported Shim`s reform package, are also considering departure. Shim herself, however, has not yet left the DLP, despite repeated calls from fellow moderates, such as Cho Seung-soo, a former DLP member who recently left to start a new progressive party. Cho is calling on Shim to join his New Left Action party.
Chun Young-se, the only Assembly representative left in the party after Shim`s resignation, is to lead the DLP for the time being.
Jin Joon-kwon, a well-known columnist and culture critic who left the DLP in 2002 over its increasingly pro-North Korean leanings, yesterday slammed the party`s refusal to accept the reform plans.
"As of today, the DLP is no more," Jin said, urging progressives to break from the DLP to form a new progressive force.
Mirroring the rapidly dwindling support for left-wing parties, the DLP suffered a crushing defeat in the presidential election last year. Its candidate Kwon Young-ghil secured just 2.8 percent of the vote, far lower that its projection of 10 percent. He won 3.9 percent in the 2002 election.
